Peniche is widely regarded as one of Europes finest surfing destinations. Being so exposed to the north Atlantic ocean it takes a beating from a lot of swell.
From day one, we knew we were in for an epic trip. As plenty of swell could be seen pounding the cliffs and it was clear we would score some waves. The northerly direction of the swell meant that unfortunately Supertubos wouldn’t work but we were not disheartened by this and simply went in search for other waves in the Peniche area.
Throughout the week the winds dropped and clouds disappeared leaving perfect surfing conditions. Note to you tan seekers..the sun in Portugal should not be taken lightly, it is seriously strong as discovered later in the evening with some very sore spots
Peniche is no tourist trap but with a little effort some hidden gems of cafes and restaurants can be found around the town with a special mention to Gaucho steakhouse in Baleal – you won’t have had a steak like it!! The locals are friendly enough although quiet and tend to keep to themselves.
We stayed overlooking Papoa beach in Peniche surf lodge owned by the parents of professional surfer Dane Hall. Papoa is a pretty little beach, deserted most of the time and we even managed to catch a surprising few waves and the occasional campfire in the evenings. The sunsets have to be seen to be believed.
As a surfing holiday destination we at Magic & Voodoo definitely recommend it and even if you have never surfed before you could try one of the many surf camps in the area, the waters were populated mainly by learners with Peniche surf camp seeming to be the largest one.
Not being able to surf the one spot that the trip was originally planned for only creates a thirst to continue looking and traveling for that one wave.
Staying stoked.
